Elective Affinities is a collaborative project with Jasper Rigole. We have a common love for found footage but the nature of our work is quite different. While Jasper examines the mechanisms that are at the basis of the construction of the original image and the possible interpretations arising from it, I focus on the space between reality and imagination by creating new originals. For this project, we’re creating a visual dialogue inspired by the Mnemosyne Atlas of the German art historian Aby Warburg. We’ve set up a temporary workshop with a photocopier in order to collect, combine and reproduce the images. We’ll respond to each other’s proposals by adding images, editing existing ensembles or by responding to the traces that arise during the project. The resulting collection is not the conclusion of a uniform or pre-developed vision, but should be seen as an attempt to better understand each other’s work.
